What's New at Garden Design School?

Garden Design School blooming in the USA

Last fall, the renowned British “Garden Design School” opened its doors in the US in Boylston, MA. at Tower Hill Botanic Garden’s magnificent facilities with its first US. Landscape Design Certificate Program. Concentrated, expert instruction by expert professional designers, mentored studio work, and practical application combine to create a focused, creative, hands-on experience designed to equip students with all they need to become successful, practicing designers. And so, six months into the 9 month program, the students blossom brightly as their mastery accelerates, and infectious enthusiasm and confidence soar.

The GDS program’s unique, intensive, part time format is designed to integrate with rather than disrupt people’s current life situations. Complete in 9 months, the program runs mid-August through early May, with 8 teaching blocks of 4 days each.

Open House / Sampler Day

May 5th, 2010 GDS has planned an open house/sampler day for those interested in the 2010-2011 program. It is the perfect opportunity to meet the directors/tutors, ask questions, meet some current students & see some of their work, hear a talk about the school, plus a mini-lecture sample of the caliber of the training. The Open House meets at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, in Boylston, MA, the same beautiful venue for the class blocks.

Garden Design School’s reputation for training and development at the highest standard continues to grow. As evidence of this, the School’s internationally recognised co-founder, principal and program tutor, Robin Templar Williams, has been invited to give a talk at The Boston Flower and Garden Show at the Seaport World Trade Center, Boston, MA in March 2010. Robin’s talk will be entitled ‘Great Garden Design  - How to achieve it – Essential Guidelines’ and will draw upon Robin’s rich insight and 30 years of practical experience into what it takes to design gardens for real fee-paying customers. Robin, who has won many awards and accolades for his exceptional and inspirational garden designs, says “the talk will draw on content from our Garden Design Diploma and is intended to help attendees learn how to apply their own creativity and passion for gardens to create great designs”. Awards all round for Garden Design School

Justine Jobson former wins silver award detail from Justine's award winning garden

JUSTINE JOBSON - AWARDED RHS PRIZE

Justine Jobson - Wins Silver at Royal RHS London Plant & Design Show 2010

Recently, former Garden Design School pupil, Justine Jobson entered her first show garden at the RHS London Plant & Design Show. Justine tells us it was a lot of hectic evenings and hard work - but
It was a really good experience, and I definitely appreciate all the help I had from some very generous and co-operative people. I'd love to do another, to try and beat my Silver medal, perhaps an outdoor one in the summer next time!

ROBIN TEMPLAR WILLIAMS - APL AWARD

The latest coup for Robin Templar Williams was to be awarded not one, but two accolades for a stunning private garden in Surrey. The garden in Chiddingfold was the winner of the ‘2009 Amenities and Landscape Award’ and the very rare ‘Judges Special Award for an Outstanding Garden, in Design, Construction and Planting’ by the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL).
Robin commented, “We hope that the ongoing successes and achievements of the faculty members inspire and motivate our students and give them confidence to achieve their own career goals.”

FI BOYLE WINS THE 2009 GARDEN DESIGN SCHOOL AWARD

The 2009 Garden Design School Student Award has been awarded to Fi Boyle, the graduate who we feel has made the most significant progress while training with us this year.

FORMER GARDEN DESIGN SCHOOL STUDENT WINS MAJOR AWARD AT CHELSEA 2008

Andrew Stevenson, who completed his landscape design education with Garden Design School in 2005, is the co-designer of a fantastic, award-winning show garden at the recent RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Andrew and his fellow designer, Steve Putnam, both work for Chessington Garden Centre – who sponsored their entry - and their garden, entitled “Mist-Placed”, won a silver flora medal in the ‘courtyard’ category. The design is based on the crumbling remains of a long-neglected chapel garden on a Victorian estate in north Yorkshire. It conveys a strong sense of solitude and serenity with a very imaginative scheme of predominantly shade-loving plants.
