Is it fair to say that you knew exactly what type of garden design course you were looking for?

Absolutely! I wanted proper, comprehensive, professional training. I looked at lots of courses which seemed to say: ‘Oh, wouldn’t it be nice to do this as a hobby and, if I’m lucky I might earn some money too’. I wasn’t interested in that. I’m married, self-employed and have two young children. This was a serious undertaking for me, especially as I had to juggle my landscaping business projects with college work.

What was it that appealed to you about GDS?

I heard about Robin through an acquaintance and saw his work. I was impressed. Then I read about Garden Design School and thought that being taught by successful, practising designers would ensure that the training was relevant and contemporary. I also thought the syllabus was comprehensive and interesting and I liked the fact that the classes were small. We all received plenty of individual attention, which meant that any weak spots were quickly dealt with.

What do you most remember about the Diploma Course?

Robin and Moira really encourage you to succeed but are thoroughly professional in dealing with all of the students.  The course notes were comprehensive and of very good quality: I use them now. The atmosphere throughout the course was relaxed, friendly and good fun: this was essential when the assignments kicked in and things got tough! I also thought the guest speakers were good: I particularly recall the workshops on hard landscaping, pond design and lighting.

How has your time at GDS helped your business?

It has given me the confidence to pitch for work I wouldn’t previously have considered. I recently presented my portfolio to a building designer who said that it was better than most of the material he saw from major firms of landscape architects.  I’ve just enjoyed my busiest ever November/December and I’ve won some sizeable projects.

Any long term aims?

My ambition is to develop my business, Creating Gardens, into a major quality brand in the landscape design and build industry. I’m bursting with ideas to make that dream come true!
